Absolute Pitch

چکیده
Absolute Pitch (AP) is the ability to identify or categorize musical pitches accurately without an external reference. Although AP is generally thought to be rare, music psychology research in the past few decades has debated on every aspect of the phenomenon. This chapter will review the theories, methods, and findings on Absolute Pitch from the cognitive psychology and neuroscience literature, with the goal of elucidating some of the following controversies on AP: its identification and prevalence, its genetic and environmental origins, its psychological and neural underpinnings, and the degree to which it may be informative as a scientific model of brain function.

Dial A440 for absolute pitch: absolute pitch memory by non-absolute pitch possessors.
Listeners without absolute (or "perfect") pitch have difficulty identifying or producing isolated musical pitches from memory. Instead, they process the relative pattern of pitches, which remains invariant across pitch transposition. Musically untrained non-absolute pitch possessors demonstrated absolute pitch memory for the telephone dial tone, a stimulus that is always heard at the same absol...
متن کاملContributions of temporal and place cues in pitch perception in absolute pitch possessors.
Pitch perception is determined by both place and temporal cues. To explore whether the manner in which these cues are used differs depending on absolute pitch capability, pitch identification experiments with and without pitch references were conducted for subjects with different absolute pitch capabilities and musical experience. Three types of stimuli were used to manipulate place and tempora...
متن کاملExamining Absolute and Relative Pitch as Automatic Processes via Auditory-Visual Stroop Test
Relative pitch is the ability to identify intervals between pitches, whereas absolute pitch is the less common ability to identify and reproduce musical pitches without reference to other pitches. This study utilized an auditory-visual Stroop test to investigate the automaticity of absolute and relative pitch. Absolute and relative pitch possessors simultaneously heard a piano tone and viewed a...
متن کاملN100m in adults possessing absolute pitch.
We recorded the auditory evoked magnetic fields from adults with and without absolute pitch under the following conditions: hearing 1000 Hz pure tones inattentively (single tone session) and listening to eight random tones and identifying each tone (labeling session). In the adults with absolute pitch, the bilateral N100m dipole moments increased significantly in the labeling session. While, in...
متن کاملChanging the tune: the structure of the input affects infants' use of absolute and relative pitch.
Sequences of notes contain several different types of pitch cues, including both absolute and relative pitch information. What factors determine which of these cues are used when learning about tone sequences? Previous research suggests that infants tend to preferentially process absolute pitch patterns in continuous tone sequences, while other types of input elicit relative pitch use by infant...
متن کاملAbsolute pitch correlates with high performance on interval naming tasks.
Absolute pitch, the rare ability to identify or produce a musical tone without a reference tone, has been shown to be advantageous in some musical tasks; however, its relevance in musical contexts primarily involving relative pitch has been questioned. To explore this issue, 36 trained musicians-18 absolute pitch possessors and 18 non-possessors with equivalent age of onset and duration of musi...
